Hyperpigmentation

What is Hyperpigmentation?

Hyperpigmentation refers to the darkening of patches of skin caused by an overproduction of melanin, the pigment responsible for skin color. It can be triggered by various factors, including sun exposure, hormonal changes (such as pregnancy or birth control), inflammation, skin injuries, and certain medications. Common types of hyperpigmentation include age spots, sun spots, melasma, and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH). During treatment, the intense pulses of light penetrate the skin, targeting melanin (pigment) or hemoglobin (blood vessels) in the targeted areas. This causes the pigment or blood vessels to absorb the light energy, leading to their destruction or fragmentation. Over time, the body's natural healing processes remove the damaged tissue, revealing smoother, clearer, and more even-toned skin. IPL treatments are non-invasive, require minimal downtime, and can be customized to suit individual skin types and concerns. They are commonly performed on the face, neck, chest, hands, and other areas of the body, providing patients with noticeable improvements in skin texture, tone, and overall appearance. With advancements in IPL technology, treatments are becoming safer, more comfortable, and more effective, making them a popular choice for individuals seeking non-surgical solutions for skin rejuvenation and enhancement.

The Key Benefits of Treatment Include:

Targeted Treatment

Laser treatments can precisely target areas of hyperpigmentation without affecting surrounding skin. This allows for effective treatment of specific pigmented lesions while minimizing damage to nearby tissue.

Stimulation of Skin Renewal

Laser energy can penetrate the skin to stimulate collagen production and promote cell turnover. This helps to rejuvenate the skin, improve texture, and fade hyperpigmented areas over time.

Selective Photothermolysis

Laser treatments utilize selective photothermolysis, a process where specific wavelengths of light are absorbed by the melanin in hyperpigmented areas. This causes the pigment to break down and be gradually absorbed and eliminated by the body, leading to a more even skin tone.

Customized Treatment

Laser treatments can be tailored to suit individual skin types, pigmentation concerns, and treatment goals. Different laser devices, wavelengths, and treatment parameters can be used to address various types and depths of hyperpigmentation.

Minimal Downtime

Many laser treatments for hyperpigmentation require minimal downtime, allowing patients to resume their normal activities shortly after treatment. While some redness or mild swelling may occur temporarily, these side effects typically subside within a few days.

Long-lasting Results

Laser treatments can provide long-lasting results for hyperpigmentation when combined with proper skincare and sun protection. Multiple treatment sessions may be needed to achieve optimal results, but once pigmented lesions are effectively treated, they are less likely to recur.

Overall, IPL treatments offer an effective non-invasive solution for hyperpigmentation, targeting specific pigmented areas while promoting skin renewal and providing long-lasting results with minimal downtime.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What are the causes for age spots, sun spots, and pigmentation?
While there are many causes that contribute to the dark patches that plague our skin, some of the main reasons can include: Prolonged sun exposure, Tanning, and Melasma.
Q: How do you treat sun spots, age spots, and hyperpigmentation?
Using Intense Light Therapy (IPL) and Dynamic Pulse Control (DPC) technology, we are able to target the selected tissue and eliminate or lighten the dark lesions.
Q: What skin conditions can you treat with IPL and DPC technology?
We can treat Melasma, Sun Spots/Age Spots/Lentigo, Dyschromia, and Hyperpigmentation.
Q: Is the treatment painful?
Clients usually report feeling an elastic band like pinch.
Q: How many treatments will I need and how often?
Treatments vary from person to person. Typically you can expect 4-6 treatments for best results, but depending on the area and size more treatments may be required, spaced apart every 4-6 weeks.
Q: What type of machine do you use to remove age spots, sun spots, and pigmentation?
I use a Sharplight laser machine with integrated IPL (Intense light therapy) and DPC (Dynamic Pulse Control), this dual therapy allows for a more selective and effective treatment. The handpiece itself cools down to -8° ensuring a comfortable experience, and preventing damage to surrounding tissue.
Q: How long does each treatment take to complete?
Depending on the size and area of the treatment, time can vary. Typically though you can expect to be with us for about 15-30 minutes.
Q: Is there any downtime?
No! There is zero downtime required after your appointment, although the tissue can scab after treatment, usually occurring 24-48 hours after treatment, before eventually sloughing off the pigmentation in the treated area.
Q: Is it normal if the treated area darkens after the treatment?
YES! That is completely normal and expected. This is a temporary reaction and will subside.
Q: Are there any risks or complications?
Erythema (redness), and edema (swelling) can occur, this is typical of the treatment and normal. Like every treatment, they are not without their risks, although rare, scarring can occur from the treatment. Darkening or lightening of the skin may occur. Scabs in the treated area are normal as the tissue heals after treatment, sloughing off the pigmentation in the process.
